Example from the field

P. Balasubramanian — Born in a small village in Tamil Nadu and coming from a large family, he needed to start earning after finishing school. This was the time of the cell-phone boom, and a friend advised him to do a course in mobile phone repair. After completing training he opened a tiny shop in Parry's Corner, Chennai, for mobile repairing, but the business was short-lived since he could not find a well-trained technician to assist him. He took up a job with a mobile-phone service training institute in the city for a salary of INR 10,000, and in 2006 joined a mobile-phone retail chain, The Mobile Store, as its technical head for Tamil Nadu, for a salary of INR 25,000. 'That's where I learned how a corporate company functioned, how they managed a whole lot of people with technology. It was a valuable experience,' says Balasubramanian, who later quit the company to start his own mobile-phone repair centre, First Call, in Adyar, in 2009. By constantly learning at work and upgrading his skills, he has tasted success today.
