Overview

Officers of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) hold some of the key positions in the Union government, state governments, public-sector companies and other statutory regulatory institutions such as the Central Bank (RBI), SEBI, and Election Commission. They are primarily responsible for regulating and monitoring the general administration and law and order in the areas allotted to them. This function is then diversified into numerous other functions such as supervising the implementation of developmental schemes and expenditure of public funds.

Work environment

Your job role will need you to work both indoors and outdoors. You will handle a team of officials. Local travel is a part of the job profile. It is a transferrable job. You are likely to work 5 to 6 days a week and 8 to 9 hours every day.

Eligibility and education roadmap

  1. 1A Diploma in Public Administration, Political Science, or Governance can be helpful to understand the basics of administrative work and governance principles.
  2. 2A bachelor's degree in any discipline from a government-recognized university is mandatory to appear for the UPSC Civil Services Examination. Degrees in disciplines such as Political Science, Public Administration, Economics, or Law can provide relevant knowledge for administrative roles.
  3. 3Although not required, a Master's degree in Public Administration, Political Science, or International Relations can deepen your understanding of governance, which may benefit you in the interview stage or during service.
  4. 4Candidates who have completed their MBBS final year but are yet to complete their internship can apply.
  5. 5Qualify the civil service exam held by the UPSC.
